Agoura lies in the western reaches of Los Angeles County, where the Ventura Freeway runs east to west through a series of valleys. From above, the freeway is the one straight, confident line. Everything else bends around it: residential streets loop through small canyons, cul-de-sacs end against slopes, and wide stretches of undeveloped hillside break the neighbourhoods apart.
To the south rise the Santa Monica Mountains, and the landscape turns rugged quickly. The area is closely tied to Paramount Ranch, where film studios once shot westerns among the rolling oak-studded hills. Much of this back country is now protected parkland, and on the map it shows as open space with thin trails and a few roads winding through it.
An Agoura map poster shows a suburb shaped more by terrain than by planning. There is no rigid grid here. Streets follow contours, creek beds and ridge lines, so the finished print looks almost organic, a web of curves with the freeway corridor running straight through the middle and the mountains closing in on the edges.
