Ajalpan Map Poster & Print
Ajalpan lies in south-eastern Puebla, in the Tehuacán Valley, a short distance from the city of Tehuacán. On a map the town forms a grid of streets on the gently sloping valley floor, while to the east the land rises into the Sierra Negra, where roads become narrow and winding and settlements scatter across steep ground.
The Tehuacán Valley holds a central place in the study of early agriculture in Mesoamerica, and one of the early archaeological phases in the valley's long sequence of human occupation carries Ajalpan's name. Today the town is a local centre for the surrounding villages, with markets, churches and farmland around its edges.
An Ajalpan map poster shows the sharp change between valley and mountain: orderly blocks and fields on one side, the dense, twisting roads of the sierra on the other. It is a strong image for families from the area and for anyone drawn to the landscapes of southern Puebla.
