Al Hoceïma Map Poster & Print
Al Hoceïma sits on Morocco's Mediterranean coast, where the Rif mountains come almost straight down to the sea. The town climbs a headland and the slopes above a broad bay. Its streets follow the contours in tight curves and switchbacks, with small coves and beaches tucked into the gaps in the rocky shoreline.
The centre is compact, and its layout reflects the town's early twentieth-century founding under Spanish administration: a few straight streets and squares on the flatter ground, with neighbourhoods winding up the hillsides behind. Past the edges, roads run along the coast and into the mountains, the only lines through otherwise rugged terrain.
Al Hoceïma National Park stretches along the coast to the west, and the small Peñón de Alhucemas island lies just offshore in the bay.
