Aldershot sits on the Hampshire and Surrey border, and its map is split in a way few English towns are. To the south lies the civilian town, with Victorian terraces, a compact shopping centre and residential streets. To the north, large areas are given over to military land, including barracks, training grounds and open heath. The layout reflects how the town developed.
Aldershot has been known as the Home of the British Army since the military camp was set up here in the 1850s. That decision transformed a small village into a garrison town. Much of what you see on a map today, from the broad cantonment roads to the wide open spaces, dates from that period.
An Aldershot map poster shows the two halves side by side. The fine grain of the town's terraced streets sits next to the larger, more open military blocks. The Basingstoke Canal runs across the north, and the Blackwater Valley forms the eastern edge. In monochrome, the contrast between the dense and the spacious gives the print a strong structure.

The canal cuts across the northern part of the area as a slim, steady line. It adds a calm waterway to a map otherwise dominated by roads and open ground.
Blackwater Valley edge
To the east, the Blackwater River and its valley corridor mark the county boundary with Surrey. On the poster they appear as a natural seam between Aldershot and its neighbours.
