Americana Map Poster & Print
Americana lies in the interior of São Paulo state, in the metropolitan region of Campinas, and from above it is a compact, tightly packed city. Residential blocks fill almost every space between the main roads, and the Anhanguera highway cuts through on a long diagonal. Industrial sheds, many linked to the textile industry that drove the city's growth, cluster near the major routes.
The city's name recalls an unusual chapter in its history. After the American Civil War, families from the southern United States settled in the area, and the place became known locally as the village of the Americans. Their descendants still hold a yearly gathering nearby, and the name stayed with the town as it grew into a city.
Water gives the map its most distinctive shapes. The Salto Grande reservoir, formed by a dam on the Atibaia River, spreads its irregular branches along the edge of the city, and smaller streams cut green corridors through the neighbourhoods.
