Arsen’yev Map Poster & Print
Arsen’yev is a town in Russia's Primorsky Krai, set in a river valley where the plains give way to the forested Sikhote-Alin range. It takes its name from Vladimir Arsenyev, the explorer and writer who surveyed this region in the early twentieth century. His book about the guide Dersu Uzala later became a celebrated film.
On the map, the town is long rather than round. It follows the course of the Arsenyevka River, with a railway and main road running parallel to the valley. The central districts form a fairly regular Soviet grid of apartment blocks and wide streets. Toward the edges, the plan breaks up into private houses, garden plots and the first slopes of the hills.
The town's best-known employer is an aviation plant that has built helicopters for decades, and its large industrial site is clearly visible on the map. An Arsen’yev map poster shows the valley, the river and the planned centre in sober black lines. It is a fitting tribute to a place named after a mapmaker of the Far East.
