Autun Map Poster
Autun was founded under Augustus as Augustodunum, and its Roman footprint is still visible from above. A long circuit of walls encloses far more ground than the modern town fills. Straight streets in the lower town echo the ancient layout, while the upper town climbs a spur to the south towards the Cathedral of Saint-Lazare.
The cathedral is known for its Romanesque sculpture, especially the carved tympanum signed by Gislebertus. The Roman legacy is equally present: two monumental gates, the Porte d'Arroux and the Porte Saint-André, still stand. There are also remains of a large theatre and the tower known as the Temple of Janus beyond the river.
An Autun map poster captures a town where two thousand years of planning overlap. The Arroux runs along the northern side and wooded hills of the Morvan rise beyond. Between them lies an irregular medieval hilltop joined to a grid laid out by Roman surveyors. The map carries both clearly.

The river runs along the town's northern edge, near the Porte d'Arroux and the Temple of Janus. It gives the map a natural boundary.
