Awa Map Poster & Print
Awa is a city in Tokushima Prefecture on the island of Shikoku, formed in 2005 through the merger of several towns. The map shows a long strip of settlement on the northern side of the Yoshino River valley, with the Sanuki mountains rising along the northern edge and the river running broadly to the south.
The land between mountains and river is flat and cultivated, crossed by roads that run east to west along the valley and small lanes linking scattered villages. Awa is known for the Awa no Dochu, a formation of eroded earth pillars on the mountain slopes, designated a natural monument of Japan.
An Awa map poster reflects a landscape more rural than urban. Clusters of houses sit among fields, the valley roads run parallel to the river and the mountains give the print a quiet upper border. It is an open, horizontal composition that captures the calm of the Shikoku countryside.

Valley roads
Main roads run east to west across the flat valley floor, parallel to the river. They tie together the villages and former town centres that make up the city.
Earth pillars
On the northern slopes lie the Awa no Dochu earth pillars, a natural monument. On the map this marks where farmland gives way to steeper, wooded ground.
