Aylmer Map Poster & Print
Aylmer lies on the north shore of the Ottawa River, west of central Gatineau and across the water from Ottawa. It was a town in its own right until 2002, when it merged into the city of Gatineau. On the map its southern edge follows the shoreline of Lac Deschênes, a wide section of the Ottawa River, while its streets extend north towards the Gatineau Hills.
The old village core stands close to the water near the marina, with a main road running east towards Hull and downtown Ottawa. Around it, later suburban development shows up as looping crescents and cul-de-sacs, very different in texture from the straight early streets by the shore. Golf courses and wooded areas add large open shapes to the plan.
The town was named after Lord Aylmer, governor of Lower Canada in the 1830s. An Aylmer map poster sets the curve of Lac Deschênes against the grid of the old village and the looping suburbs beyond, a clear picture of how the place grew back from the water.
