Baalbek Map Poster & Print
Baalbek lies in the northern Beqaa Valley of Lebanon, on the fertile plain between the Lebanon and Anti-Lebanon ranges. The modern town spreads around a remarkable centrepiece: the great temple complex of ancient Heliopolis. On the map, its courtyards and platforms form a huge rectangular footprint surrounded by streets, orchards and fields.
The site includes the Temple of Jupiter, whose surviving columns are among the tallest of the Roman world, and the unusually well-preserved Temple of Bacchus. Nearby quarries still hold enormous cut stones, including the one known as the Stone of the Pregnant Woman. The ruins are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and host the long-running Baalbeck International Festival.
