Baden-Baden lies where the Oos valley opens out of the northern Black Forest toward the Rhine plain. The town follows the valley, so on a map it forms a long, narrow shape between wooded hills. The old town climbs a steep slope around the thermal springs, while the Oos runs through the centre in a green belt of parks.
The springs have been used since Roman times. In the nineteenth century the town became one of Europe's best-known resorts, with the Kurhaus, the casino and the Friedrichsbad bathhouse. In 2021 it was named one of the Great Spa Towns of Europe on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
