Bagan Serai is in the Kerian district of northwest Perak, one of the main rice-growing areas on Malaysia's west coast. From above, the town is a small cluster of streets in a very large field of paddy. Almost everything around it is flat, and the land is divided by the straight lines of drains, bunds and farm roads.
Those lines are the main feature on the map. The Kerian area has been irrigated for more than a century, and the channels and plots make an even grid that stretches in every direction from the town. The streets of Bagan Serai are more irregular, and they gather along the main road and the older shophouse rows.
