Balqash Map Poster & Print
Balqash sits on the northern shore of Lake Balkhash, surrounded by the dry steppe and semi-desert of central Kazakhstan. The map is framed by the lake's shoreline, which curves around a shallow bay. Streets are laid out in the broad, regular blocks typical of Soviet city planning, with wide avenues and large courtyards between apartment buildings.
The city was founded in the late 1930s around a copper smelting plant, and the industrial complex still covers a large area on the edge of town. Lake Balkhash itself is unusual: its western part is almost fresh water while the eastern part is salty, the two halves joined by a narrow strait.
A Balqash map poster places a planned city in a very large empty landscape. The grid is tidy and legible, the industrial zone forms a solid block beside it, and the lake fills much of the frame with open water. The stark setting makes for one of the more graphic compositions a map poster can offer.
