Ban Khoan lies in Bokeo province in the far northwest of Laos, on the east bank of the Mekong. This stretch of river sits near the Golden Triangle, the area where the borders of Laos, Thailand and Myanmar converge on the water. On a map, the Mekong is the defining element, a wide, gently curving band that separates three countries.
The settlement follows the river, with roads running parallel to the bank and shorter lanes reaching inland toward fields and low hills.
