The town has a dense centre of narrow streets and small blocks, with the main roads leading out toward Mysuru and neighbouring towns. Newer residential areas spread along those roads in a looser, more regular pattern.
The land around Bannūr is largely irrigated, with fields of sugarcane and paddy divided by channels and embankments. Tanks, the traditional reservoirs of the region, appear as rounded bodies of water among the fields.
