Bardejov has one of the best-preserved medieval town centres in Central Europe, and its historic core is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. From above, the old town is instantly recognisable. A long, rectangular square is lined with narrow burgher houses, with the Gothic town hall standing freely in the middle and the Basilica of St. Giles along one side.
Around the square, lanes lead to the surviving fortifications, whose walls and bastions still trace much of the old town's outline. The Topľa river flows past below, and newer housing spreads beyond the walls. North of town, in a wooded valley, lies the spa of Bardejovské Kúpele, known for its mineral springs and open-air museum of wooden architecture.

Much of the medieval wall circuit survives around the old town. On the poster it draws a firm outline between the historic core and later districts.
