Bastia Umbra lies on the valley plain of Umbria, just below the hill of Assisi. Unlike the region's many hill towns, it sits on flat ground, and from above its streets spread easily in several directions. The Chiascio river runs along the town. On a map you see a small historic core surrounded by more open, modern neighbourhoods.
The old centre keeps its compact outline, with the main square at its heart. Around it, housing, industrial zones and farmland extend across the plain in the straighter lines of later planning.
