Berriane Map Poster & Print
Berriane lies in the M'zab region of the Algerian Sahara, north of Ghardaïa. It is one of the Mozabite towns, or ksour, built by the Ibadi community of the region. Their architecture and town plans are closely linked to those of the M'zab Valley, which is listed by UNESCO. The old town sits on a rise, with houses packed tightly together and streets winding up toward the mosque at the top.
Below the old town, a palm grove follows the wadi, where water is carefully managed through wells and channels. Newer districts have grown around the historic core in more regular patterns. On a map, the contrast is clear: an almost circular, very dense old town, a green strip of palms, and open desert beyond.
