Bilqās is a town in Dakahlia Governorate in Egypt's Nile Delta, north of the governorate capital, Mansoura. The land here is entirely flat and intensely farmed. On a map, the town looks like a dense cluster of streets sitting in a wide, finely divided agricultural landscape.
The delta's irrigation system shapes everything around it. Canals and drains run in long straight or gently curving lines through the fields, often with roads following their banks. The town's own streets are tight and irregular at the centre and become more open toward the edges, where it meets the patchwork of farmland and neighbouring villages.
