Bogatynia lies in the Turoszów pocket, a narrow strip of Polish territory that reaches between Germany and the Czech Republic. The town follows the valley of the Miedzianka stream in a long, thin line. On a map its outline stretches for several kilometers but is only a few streets wide.
Just north of the town is the Turów lignite mine, one of the largest open-pit mines in Poland, with its power station beside it. On a map it appears as a huge area with no streets, edged by service roads. Few towns of this size sit next to an industrial landscape on such a scale.
Bogatynia is also known for its Upper Lusatian houses, timber buildings with a distinctive frame supporting the upper floor. A Bogatynia map poster captures the town's unusual geography: a narrow valley settlement, two national borders close by and a vast industrial landscape at its edge.
