Brétigny-sur-Orge lies in Essonne, about thirty kilometres south of Paris, at the point where the continuous suburbs start to give way to open plateau. The map is made of residential streets: small blocks of houses, curving cul-de-sacs, and a few larger estates. A railway line runs through the middle and ties the town to the capital, and the station sits close to its commercial centre.
Along its northern side the town looks toward the valley of the Orge, the small river that gave it its name and that winds through a green corridor of parks and meadows. The land rises gently to the south. From above, that change shows as a slow shift from the tight grain of the older neighbourhoods to wider plots and farmland.
The biggest single feature on a Brétigny-sur-Orge map poster is the former air base to the south-west. For decades it was a centre for French flight testing, and its long runways and aprons still cut sharp straight lines across the plateau. Parts of the site are being redeveloped now, but its geometry remains the strongest shape in the area.
