Brie-Comte-Robert lies in Seine-et-Marne, south-east of Paris, on the wide agricultural plateau of the Brie. The town was historically an important market and fortified centre, and the map still shows a dense medieval core. Its narrow streets curve around the old centre and meet at small squares, with later suburbs spreading out beyond.
At the heart of the town stands the medieval château, a square fortress ringed by a moat. Its outline is easy to spot on a plan because it is so regular. Nearby, the Gothic Church of Saint-Étienne rises above the rooftops. Around the edges, the historic core gives way to houses, main roads and the open fields of the plateau.
