Cai Lậy is in the Mekong Delta, in the former Tiền Giang area now administered as part of Đồng Tháp province. The land is completely flat, and on a map the town is a narrow band of streets along the main road. Canals, drainage channels and waterways run through the surrounding countryside in long straight lines.
The area is known for agriculture, especially rice and fruit orchards, and the town serves as a market centre for the surrounding villages. National Highway 1, the main road through the delta, passes through the area, and much of the local life is organised along it and the waterways that cross it.
A Cai Lậy map poster shows how the town grows along roads and water. Houses are strung out in long ribbons on either side of the canals, fields fill the spaces between them and the town centre is where these lines meet. It is a clear, calm picture of how people live in the delta.
