The labyrinth centre
The old town's streets bend, split and rejoin with no apparent pattern. They form one of the most unusual colonial street plans in Latin America.

关于地图
Camagüey Map Poster & Print
Camagüey, one of Cuba's oldest cities, lies on the plains of the island's centre. Its map is unlike most colonial cities in the Americas. Instead of a regular grid, the historic centre is a maze of curving streets and sudden dead ends. The streets open out into small, irregularly shaped plazas, many of them in front of a church.
One local story says the streets were laid out this way to confuse pirates who raided the town in the seventeenth century. Whatever the reason, the historic centre was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. The city is also known for its tinajones, large clay jars once used to collect rainwater, which have become a symbol of Camagüey.
A Camagüey map poster turns that labyrinth into its main subject. Narrow lanes twist between plazas, and the more regular districts that grew around them sit at the edges. Two small rivers, the Hatibonico and the Tínima, cross the city. It reads almost like a puzzle, which suits a city famous for being hard to find your way around.

Scattered plazas
Small squares open up throughout the historic centre, many beside churches. They look like pockets of open space breaking up the dense web of lanes.
Planned outer districts
Away from the old core, streets straighten into more conventional grids. The contrast highlights just how irregular the historic centre is.

为什么选Camagüey
一张有意义的地图
Camagüey's maze-like centre makes a beautiful graphic on its own, and it means even more to Cubans from the city and to travellers who got lost in its lanes. It is a map that invites people to look closely.
Set your own title, subtitle and coordinates line, perhaps with the year of your visit or a family name. Then choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Paper gives the colonial streets a soft, archival feel.
