Camanducaia is in southern Minas Gerais, in the Serra da Mantiqueira near the border with São Paulo state. The mountains shape the entire municipality. The main town lies in a valley, while its district of Monte Verde, higher up, is a well-known mountain resort that attracts visitors with a cool climate, forests and chalet-style inns.
On a map, the town centre follows the valley floor. Streets run along the watercourse and climb the lower slopes. The Fernão Dias highway, linking São Paulo and Belo Horizonte, passes through the municipality. From the valley, winding roads climb into the mountains, with tight curves that give the map a distinctive pattern.
