Chandrakona lies in Paschim Medinipur district of West Bengal, in the transitional country where the flat Gangetic plain meets the drier, red-soil uplands to the west. The town's map is irregular and intimate. Narrow lanes curve between clusters of houses, and the main road cuts a steadier line through the middle. Small ponds and water tanks dot the layout, as in many Bengal settlements.
Chandrakona has a long past as a local centre and is associated with several old temples that reflect the region's building traditions.
