Chartres rises above the valley of the Eure, southwest of Paris, and its outline is easy to read from above. The old town sits on a small hill, crowned by Chartres Cathedral. Narrow medieval streets and stairways lead down the slope to the river. A ring of boulevards follows the line of the old fortifications, and beyond it lies the flat, open farmland of the Beauce.
The cathedral is one of the best-preserved Gothic buildings in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is known for its medieval stained glass and the labyrinth set into the nave floor. In the lower town, the Eure splits into small channels lined with old washhouses and mills, adding fine detail to the map's lower edge.
