Chegem is a town in Kabardino-Balkaria, in the North Caucasus, just north of the republic's capital, Nalchik. It lies where the Chegem River leaves the mountains and crosses the foothill plain. On a map, the river runs through the landscape in a braided, shifting channel, and the town's streets are laid out in a largely regular pattern on the flat land beside it.
Chegem is surrounded by orchards and farmland, which appear as large rectangular plots around the edges of town. To the south, the Chegem River rises in the high Caucasus and flows through the Chegem Gorge, known for its waterfalls and cliffs, though the town itself sits in the gentler terrain below.
