Chełmno Map Poster & Print
Chełmno stands on a high escarpment above the Vistula valley in northern Poland, and its old town is one of the best-preserved medieval layouts in the country. The town was founded under the Teutonic Order and gave its name to Chełmno law, a town charter of 1233 that became a model for many settlements across the region.
From above, the old town is almost a textbook grid: straight streets meeting at right angles, a large market square at the centre with the Renaissance town hall, and blocks packed tightly within a ring of defensive walls. Much of that wall survives, along with several Gothic churches, and the edge of the plateau drops sharply toward the river plain.
Chełmno is often called the city of lovers, because relics associated with Saint Valentine are kept in its parish church. Walls and escarpment
Surviving defensive walls trace the old town's outline, while the steep edge of the plateau falls away toward the Vistula floodplain and gives the map a strong natural border.
