Chilly-Mazarin is a commune in the Essonne department, south of Paris, close to Orly airport and Massy. On a map it forms a patchwork of neighbourhoods: an older centre with narrow, irregular streets, later housing estates, and larger roads that carry traffic through the southern suburbs. The Yvette valley adds a thread of green running across the town.
The double name joins the old village of Chilly with the name of the Mazarin family, who held the local lordship in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Today the town is mostly residential, and its layout reflects successive phases of growth, from the historic core near the church to the modern blocks built as the Paris region expanded.
