Cimitarra lies in the west of Santander Department, in the Magdalena Medio region, the warm lowlands along the middle Magdalena River basin. This is flat and rolling land, largely given over to cattle ranching and farming, and far from the Andean ridges that shape most of Santander's other towns.
The map shows a compact urban grid of blocks and streets at the centre, then a very open territory around it. Rural roads run long distances between farms, and rivers and streams wind through the pasture. The contrast between the dense town and the spacious lowlands is the strongest feature of the composition.
