Culemborg Map Poster & Print
Culemborg is a historic town in Gelderland, on the south bank of the Lek, one of the branches of the Rhine. It received town rights in the Middle Ages. Its compact old centre still shows its origins: a tight core of streets inside the line of its former fortifications, with the river and its floodplain just to the north.
From above, the old town is easy to pick out. It is a dense, irregular cluster of narrow streets and blocks with a clear outer edge where walls and moats once stood. Around it, later neighbourhoods spread out in the more open, planned patterns of the twentieth century. Canals, polder ditches and a railway line cross the flat Dutch landscape.
Culemborg is the birthplace of Jan van Riebeeck, who founded the Dutch settlement at the Cape of Good Hope in 1652. A Culemborg map poster sets the medieval core against the wide Lek and the orderly Dutch surroundings, a combination that reads especially well in a minimal black-and-white print.

North of the town, the Lek and its broad floodplain bring a wide open band into the composition. The water and dikes contrast with the tight historic streets.
Polder landscape
Around the newer districts, straight ditches, dikes and field boundaries run across the flat land. These faint linear patterns give the outer poster a distinctly Dutch rhythm.
