Dalserf is a parish in South Lanarkshire, in the stretch of the Clyde Valley between Lanark and the edge of the Glasgow conurbation. From above the most striking thing is the River Clyde, winding through a broad green valley. Small settlements, farm roads and the main valley road follow its course. The map is less a street grid than a scatter of villages joined by country lanes.
The Clyde Valley has long been known for orchards and market gardening, helped by its sheltered slopes, and much of that pattern of fields and hedged plots still shows up on a map. Wooded banks and side streams cut into the valley sides, so the contour of the land is legible even in plain linework.
