Downey lies in southeastern Los Angeles County, between the Rio Hondo to the west and the San Gabriel River to the east. From above, both rivers run in straight concrete channels, framing a city of regular suburban streets. The 5, 105 and 605 freeways pass through or along its edges, and wide boulevards cut across the grid in long lines.
The city has a notable place in aerospace history. The plant that operated here for decades worked on the Apollo program and the Space Shuttle, and the site is now home to the Columbia Memorial Space Center. Downey is also known for having the oldest operating McDonald's restaurant, which still keeps its original design.
