Elsdorf lies west of Cologne in the Rhein-Erft district, on flat, fertile land of the Lower Rhine plain. The town centre is small and practical, with main roads meeting near the church and residential streets spreading out from there. Nearby villages belong to the municipality and appear as separate clusters among fields.
The most unusual feature on the map is right next door: the Hambach open-pit lignite mine, one of the largest in Europe, which borders the municipality and has reshaped the surrounding landscape. Elsdorf is also known for its sugar factory, which processes beet grown across the region, a reminder that this is still farming country.
