Eschwege lies on the Werra river in north-eastern Hesse, in a broad valley between wooded hills. The old town sits close to the river, and its narrow, irregular streets are lined with hundreds of half-timbered houses. On a map, the medieval core shows as a dense, slightly oval knot of lanes, clearly distinct from the more open neighbourhoods around it.
The Werra curves past the town, with meadows, side channels and a lake on the flood plain adding soft shapes to the composition. The Landgrafenschloss, a former residence of the landgraves of Hesse, stands at the edge of the old town. The town's figure of the Dietemann, a watchman who appears on the castle clock, is a well-known local symbol.
