Francisco Sá is in the north of Minas Gerais, not far from Montes Claros, in a region where the landscape becomes drier and more open, between cerrado savanna and scrub. The town serves a large rural municipality of cattle and farm land, and the main road through it links it with Montes Claros and the north of the state.
On a map the town is a grid of blocks laid out around its main square, extended along the highway into a longer shape. At its edges the streets end quickly, and dirt roads and field boundaries spread across the surrounding country. Small streams and reservoirs show as thin lines and patches in the open land.
