Frome lies in eastern Somerset, on hilly ground above the River Frome. The town grew as a centre of the wool and cloth trade, and its medieval and later streets climb and wind across the slopes rather than following any grid. On a map, the centre is a dense web of narrow lanes, with the river bending around its lower edge.
Frome has an unusually large number of listed buildings for a town of its size. Cheap Street, a short medieval lane, is known for the small water channel that runs down its middle, and the Catherine Hill area is a network of steep, narrow streets. The town is also known for its monthly independent market, which fills the centre.
