Funchal, the capital of Madeira, rises from its bay like an amphitheatre. On a map the streets start along the waterfront and climb inland in tight switchbacks, following the steep slopes of the island. Deep ravines carrying the city's streams cut down through the town to the sea, dividing it into separate districts.
The city is known for its New Year's Eve fireworks over the bay and for the Monte toboggan, wicker sledges that run down steep streets from the hill above town. A cable car links the seafront to Monte, and the harbour pier extends out into the Atlantic. Cristiano Ronaldo was born in Funchal.
