Galesong Map Poster & Print
Galesong is a coastal town in Takalar Regency, South Sulawesi, a short distance south of Makassar. It faces the Makassar Strait, and its map is shaped by that coast. Villages and roads run in a continuous band along a long, fairly straight shoreline, while rice fields, fishponds and small rivers fill the flatter land behind.
The settlement follows the sea. Main roads run parallel to the coast, and shorter lanes lead down to the beach where fishing boats are pulled up. Inland, the streets loosen into scattered hamlets among the paddies. The layout reflects the town's long ties to fishing and seafaring, which the Makassar coast has been known for over centuries.
Galesong is also linked to Karaeng Galesong, a seventeenth-century Makassarese nobleman who fought in Java after the fall of Gowa.
