Gardanne Map Poster
Gardanne sits in the basin between Aix-en-Provence and Marseille, and its plan shows that position clearly. The oldest streets wrap around a hill in tight, curving bands. Below them the town loosens into a wider pattern of avenues, housing and open land. On paper you can see where the medieval settlement ends and the twentieth-century town begins.
The town's working history is written into its outline. For generations Gardanne was known for lignite mining and heavy industry, and the large parcels and rail lines on its edges come from that period. Paul Cézanne lived here in the mid-1880s and painted the hill town several times. His canvases break the houses into stacked, faceted blocks, the same arrangement a street map records.
A Gardanne map poster puts the coiled lanes of the hill against the flatter, more open layout around it. In black and white the contrast is easy to read: dense curves at the centre, longer straight roads heading out toward Aix and the coast, and a rural edge of fields and scrub that marks where the basin begins to rise.
