Gauripur lies in Dhubri district, close to where the Brahmaputra leaves Assam for Bangladesh. The country here is low and wet, and on a map water is everywhere. Channels, ponds and seasonal streams wind across the plain. The town's roads rise above them on the firmer ground and run in loose lines toward neighbouring settlements.
The town is closely tied to the old zamindari family of Gauripur, whose members left a notable cultural mark. Pramathesh Barua, a pioneering director of early Indian cinema, came from this family. So did Pratima Barua Pandey, the folk singer remembered for her Goalpariya songs, many of them about elephants and the life of the region.
