Gevelsberg lies in the Ennepe valley in North Rhine-Westphalia, between Hagen and Wuppertal, on the southern edge of the Ruhr. The town follows the river, so on a map it is long and narrow: a main road, a railway and the Ennepe all running side by side along the valley floor, with housing climbing the slopes on either side.
The town has a long industrial history based on metalworking along the river, and the pattern of factories, workers' housing and small side streets still shows in its plan. Gevelsberg is also known regionally for its Kirmes, a large annual fair with a long tradition that fills the town centre every summer.

The river and railway give a strong horizontal, side streets branch up the hillsides like ribs, and forests on the higher ground leave broad empty spaces at the edges.
