Goleta lies just west of Santa Barbara on California's south-facing coast, where the shoreline runs east to west instead of north to south. The Santa Ynez Mountains rise behind the town, and the Pacific lies in front, so the city is set on a narrow coastal plain between them.
On a map, the Goleta Slough and the runways of Santa Barbara Airport take up a large area near the coast, and the University of California, Santa Barbara sits on the bluffs next to it, its campus almost surrounded by water. Residential streets spread across the plain, with curving roads to the west and grids closer to the old town.
A Goleta map poster pulls these features together: the long coastline, the flat wetlands, the campus and the housing reaching toward the foothills. Ellwood, on the western side, is known for its winter monarch butterfly groves. The map is compact, but it contains a lot of different shapes.
