Grimsby Map Poster & Print
Grimsby lies in the Niagara Region of Ontario, on the south shore of Lake Ontario between Hamilton and St. Catharines. Its map is defined by two parallel edges: the straight shoreline of the lake to the north and the Niagara Escarpment rising steeply to the south. The town, the Queen Elizabeth Way and the rail line all run in the band between them.
Forty Mile Creek flows down from the escarpment through the centre of town to the lake, one of several streams that notch the slope. On the shore, Grimsby Beach grew out of a nineteenth-century Methodist camp meeting into a colony of small, colourful cottages, many of which survive. Above the town, the Bruce Trail follows the escarpment edge through woods and lookouts.
A Grimsby map poster shows how strongly geography sets the town's form. In black and white the lake becomes a broad empty field, the escarpment a band of roads and trails following the slope, and the town a long, narrow strip of streets in between. To the east and west, the orchards and vineyards of the Niagara fruit belt fill the land.
