Großostheim lies in the Aschaffenburg district of Bavaria, just west of Aschaffenburg and close to the border with Hesse. It sits on the Bachgau, a gently rolling area of farmland between the Main valley and the Odenwald hills, and on a map the town forms a rounded cluster with a clear historic core.
The oldest streets curve through the centre in an irregular pattern, typical of a Franconian market town, while newer residential areas extend outward in more regular loops and cul-de-sacs. Several smaller villages belong to the municipality, and they appear as separate clusters linked by country roads across the fields.
