Güstrow Map Poster & Print
Güstrow lies in the heart of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, south of Rostock, in a landscape of fields, woods and lakes. It was once a ducal residence, and its Renaissance castle, Schloss Güstrow, is one of the most important of its kind in northern Germany. The town is also closely linked with the sculptor Ernst Barlach, who lived and worked here for much of his life.
From above, the old town forms a compact oval of streets around the market square and the cathedral, whose interior holds Barlach's famous Floating Angel. Green belts mark the line of former fortifications, and the castle stands in its gardens on the edge of the centre. To the south, the Inselsee lake adds a broad shape of water on the town's outskirts.
