Guisborough lies in the north-east of England, between Middlesbrough and the northern edge of the North York Moors. On a map the town stretches along a wide main street and market place. Residential streets spread to the north and south, and the wooded slopes of the Cleveland Hills rise immediately to the south, where the streets come to an end.
The town is often described as the ancient capital of Cleveland. Its best-known landmark is Gisborough Priory, an Augustinian foundation whose tall, ruined east end still stands beside the town centre. Beyond the town, Guisborough Forest and the moorland edge offer walking routes, and Roseberry Topping, with its distinctive profile, is not far to the south-west.

Toward the north the map leads into the urban area of Teesside, while to the south the streets give way to forest and open hills.
