关于地图
Gyumri Map Poster & Print
Gyumri, Armenia's second city, sits on the open Shirak plateau at about 1,500 metres, near the Turkish border. Its historic centre, Kumayri, was laid out in the nineteenth century when the town was the Russian garrison city of Alexandropol. From above it is a clear rectangular grid of long straight streets, and many of the houses are built from dark volcanic tufa and red stone.
The city has had several names, including Alexandropol and Leninakan, and its twentieth century was marked by the 1988 Spitak earthquake, which destroyed much of it. Rebuilding took decades and pushed new districts outward. The circular Black Fortress still stands on a rise at the western edge. Vardanants Square and the churches around it anchor the centre.
A Gyumri map poster shows the regular historic grid, the looser Soviet-era districts around it and the wide, treeless plain that surrounds the city. It is a strong layout to print, with orderly and dense lines at the core that open into space at the edges.

Black Fortress
On the western edge, the round Russian fortress built in the 1830s stands out as a closed circle against the straight streets of the city.
Shirak plateau
Around the city, the high, open plain stretches away with few trees, so Gyumri's built-up shape sits clearly against an almost empty background.

为什么选Gyumri
一张有意义的地图
Gyumri means craftsmanship, humour and resilience to many Armenians, both at home and across the diaspora. A map of its grid is a quietly proud object for anyone with roots in Shirak or memories of Kumayri's stone streets.
