Hemer Map Poster
Hemer lies on the northern edge of the Sauerland, where the hills of the region begin to rise out of the Ruhr lowlands. The town is made up of several districts joined along valleys, so there is no single compact centre. On a map the streets stretch out in fingers between wooded slopes, with forest pushing into the gaps.
Hemer is known for the Felsenmeer, a field of weathered limestone boulders in the woods that is protected as a geotope, and for the Heinrichshöhle, a show cave. In 2010 the town hosted a state garden show on the site of former barracks, which became the Sauerlandpark. During the Second World War those same grounds held the prisoner-of-war camp Stalag VI A.
